The Dedani Dining Table is a metal dining table handcrafted in Kenya. Its pedestal is built from bent rod and banded rings, a form that takes patience at the bench because every curve has to be worked by hand before the pieces are joined. The result is a base that reads as sculpture from across a room and disappears beneath the tabletop when you sit down to eat. The frame is metal, finished dark with a faint bronze cast that catches light along the rounded edges. Four legs splay gently outward from a slim column encircled by two horizontal bands, giving the structure openness rather than bulk. Above it sits a rectangular top in a pale cream with grey-brown veining, its corners softened and its surface smooth and matt. The proportions are tall and compact, closer to counter height than to a standard low dining table. This dining table suits a kitchen corner, an apartment dining nook or the open end of a living area where floor space is limited. It works with upholstered stools, as shown here, and sits comfortably over a woven rug. A vase, a bowl of fruit and morning light are enough dressing for it. Metalwork has a long, living history in Kenya, where fabrication is still done in small workshops by makers who bend, weld and finish their own pieces.
