The Chumvi Chair is a chair handcrafted in Kenya. It takes the language of the old café stool — a looping frame, a drum-shaped cushion — and sharpens it into something more deliberate. The curve of the backrest is drawn in a single continuous line, and the seat sits inside that line rather than on top of it. Small decisions like that are made by hand, one chair at a time. The frame is slender tubing finished in matte black, bent into a tall hoop at the back and braced low between the legs. A round seat is upholstered in a mottled brown with a faint crackled grain, piped around its edge and held proud of the frame. The backrest is a tapered panel in flat red, stitched at the perimeter and set into the hoop. Two colours, one structure, nothing hidden. This chair suits a kitchen counter, a small dining table, a studio desk or a café corner where seats are pulled in and out all day. The narrow footprint lets several sit side by side without crowding. Against pale walls the red reads as a deliberate accent; against darker joinery it warms the room.
