The Chumvi Side Table is a marble and metal side table handcrafted in Kenya. It began as flat metal stock, cut and joined into a crossed frame, then finished in a warm golden tone. The stone top was selected and squared by hand, so the run of its veining belongs to this piece alone. The frame is metal, formed into two X-shaped supports that meet at a low rectangular footing and open outward to carry the top. The marble slab sits square within a shallow lip, its surface smooth and cool, patterned with grey and charcoal veins that drift across a pale ground. The proportions are deliberately narrow at the waist and wide at the base, which gives the side table an airy, drawn line rather than a solid block. Set it beside a sofa or an armchair, where the height suits a book, a bowl and a glass without crowding. The stone reads well against linen upholstery and a textured rug, and the golden frame picks up low afternoon light. Two placed together can stand in for a coffee table in a compact sitting room. A damp cloth is enough for daily care. Kenyan making has long combined imported and local materials with metalwork learned in small city workshops, and this table sits in that lineage. Buying through Kamara means the piece comes from a named independent maker rather than a factory line, and the small irregularities in stone and finish are part of what you are paying attention to.
