Fanaka Coffee Table
Handcrafted by By Faith Furnitures in 005, Upper Savannah, Nairobi, Kenya
The Fanaka Coffee Table is a round coffee table handcrafted in Kenya from board. It was drawn as one idea rather than two: a low circular table and the four half-moon seats that slide beneath it. Assembled by hand, the piece reads as a single dark form when everything is tucked away, and opens into a small seating circle when the stools are pulled out. The table is built from board in a deep, near-black tone, with a faint straight grain lifting through the surface where the light crosses it. The top is a full circle with a softly eased edge, carried on a cruciform pedestal of broad vertical panels. Each of the four curved stools rests on its own pair of squared legs and follows the arc of the tabletop exactly, so the outline stays unbroken. The finish is matte and even across every face. This coffee table suits a living room arranged around a sofa, where the stools become extra perches for guests, a footrest, or a place to set a tray. The dark surface holds books, a candle and a vase without visual clutter, and it sits comfortably over a woven rug. In a family room it works as a low table by day and additional seating in the evening. Kenyan furniture making has long favoured pieces that earn their footprint, and this one does. Buying through Kamara connects you directly with the workshop that shaped it, so the maker's hand and judgement stay attached to the object in your home.
