The 5by 6 Upholstered Bed is an upholstered bed handcrafted in Kenya. The headboard is the piece's defining gesture: a tall panel worked in a diamond pattern, each button drawn in by hand so the fabric gathers into soft, even folds. Winged returns fold forward at either side, framing the pillows and closing the bed into its own quiet alcove. The work is patient rather than showy, and it reads that way in a room. The frame is chemfer, wrapped in a densely woven charcoal-grey fabric that shifts between slate and near-black as the light moves across it. The footboard is a single flat upholstered panel, unbuttoned, which balances the detail above it. Low squared feet lift the base just clear of the floor. Seams run straight along the rails, and the upholstery is pulled taut over the side panels with no slack at the corners. This is a bed for a principal bedroom where it can sit proud of the wall and take the weight of the room. The dark fabric holds its own against pale plaster, linen bedding and oak flooring.
