The 5by6 Upholstered Bed is an upholstered bed handcrafted in Kenya in a chemfer construction. It was drawn around a single idea: a headboard that reads as quietly as a folded sheet of fabric. The channelling is set out by hand, each flute running true against the next, and the panels are angled so the lines meet in a soft chevron at the centre. The frame is built in chemfer and wrapped in a pale cream upholstery with a fine, lightly textured weave. Padded panels form a low wingback profile at the head, while the footboard repeats the same vertical channelling in a shallower band. Slim vertical strips in a warm brass tone punctuate the headboard and footboard, and the bed stands on short tapered legs finished in dark timber. This is a bed for a main bedroom where the palette is already calm: linen bedding, a woven floor covering, a lamp on either side. The pale upholstery takes daylight well and softens under a warm bulb in the evening. The headboard is padded from edge to edge, which matters if you read sitting up. Bedside tables in dark or natural timber sit comfortably against it. Kenyan furniture-making has long combined imported forms with local hands and local workshops, and a bed like this sits squarely in that tradition.
