The 5by6 Carved Mahogany Bed is a mahogany bed handcrafted in Kenya. Its headboard rises into a crowned arch, framed by carved scrollwork that has been shaped by hand rather than pressed or moulded. The carving is deep and continuous, running from the crest down through the shoulders of the frame and picking up again along the footboard. Small variations between one scroll and the next are the mark of hand work. The bed is built from mahogany. The wood carries a warm reddish-brown tone that deepens in the recessed carving and lightens across the flat central panels, where the grain reads clearly beneath a soft sheen. The headboard centres on a lattice-cut medallion set within a shaped panel. The footboard repeats the motif at a lower scale, with carved corner posts that finish in turned feet, giving the bed a settled, symmetrical proportion. This is a bed for a main bedroom with room to breathe around it. It sits comfortably against a plain painted wall, where the carved silhouette does the work that artwork would otherwise do.
