Cheborge Shoe Rack
Handcrafted by Modernbuild in 005, Upper Savannah, Nairobi, Kenya
The Cheborge Shoe Rack is a five-tier shoe rack handcrafted in Kenya from cypress and board. It was made by hand for the part of the home that works hardest and is looked at least: the few steps between the front door and the rest of the house. The proportions are quiet and horizontal, so the piece reads as a low console rather than a storage unit. Nothing about it asks for attention. Two solid side panels carry five open shelves, each one built from rounded slats set in a row with narrow gaps between them. The slats give the rack an airy, almost linear rhythm and let dust and grit fall through rather than settle. The surface is dark, with the grain of the timber still legible under the finish, and the edges are eased rather than sharp. Board and cypress are used together, the panels flat and continuous, the slats turned. The rack sits comfortably in an entryway against a wall, under a mirror or a framed print, with a runner or mat in front of it. Five tiers hold everyday shoes at an easy reach: trainers and sandals near the top, boots and heavier pairs below. It also works along a corridor, inside a walk-in wardrobe, or at the back door. Cypress is widely worked in Kenyan joinery shops, and this shoe rack reflects that everyday, practical tradition rather than a decorative one. Buying through Kamara means the piece comes from an independent Kenyan maker, made by hand rather than pressed out in volume.
