Mnazi Wall Panel
Handcrafted by Modernbuild in 005, Upper Savannah, Nairobi, Kenya
The Mnazi Wall Panel is a decorative board panel handcrafted in Kenya. It is built as a framed picture that leans on its own easel rather than a wall fixing, so it can be moved and re-angled as a room changes. The composition is quiet: a single frond, cut in silhouette, floating inside an arch. The making shows in the small irregularities of the cut edges. The panel is made from board, framed in a warm timber border and raised on a four-legged easel of the same lighter wood. Behind the frond, closely spaced vertical flutes run the full height of the backing, broken by a smooth arched field at the centre. The dark matte backing absorbs light while the pale cut-out and the frame catch it, giving the piece depth from across a room. This is a decorative panel that works where a wall is already full or where drilling is not an option. Stand it in a living room corner, at the end of a hallway, beside a console or behind a sofa. It sits comfortably next to planted vessels, woven rugs and low timber furniture, and it reads clearly in both morning light and lamplight. Kenyan makers have long worked with cut and layered timber for interiors, and this panel belongs to that line of work. Buying through Kamara means the piece comes from a maker's own workshop rather than a production line, and that the marks of hand cutting and finishing are part of what you receive.
