Chibaru Sofa
Handcrafted by Veronica furniture in 009, Karen, Nairobi, Kenya
The Chibaru Sofa is a three-seater sofa handcrafted in Kenya. It was built by hand from the frame outward, with each seat and back cushion shaped and fitted individually rather than cut to a single pattern. The soft, squared silhouette is a deliberate choice: the maker kept the lines full and low rather than tapering them, so the piece reads as one continuous mass. The sofa is upholstered in a textured blue fabric with a subtle woven grain that catches light across the seat fronts. Three seat cushions sit in line beneath three matching back cushions, and the arms curve outward in the same rounded profile, wrapping the form without interrupting it. Seams run cleanly along the cushion edges, and the low base keeps the body close to the floor. Placed against a pale wall, the blue holds the room without competing with it. It suits a living room laid over a natural-fibre rug, with a low round table within reach and a linen throw across one arm. The three-seat width takes a family through a long evening, and the depth invites sitting sideways with a book as easily as upright with company. Kenya's furniture workshops have long worked to order, one piece at a time, with makers responsible for a commission from frame to final stitch. Buying from a Kamara maker means your sofa comes from that tradition rather than from a production line, and that the hands behind it are known.
