Kifaru Corner Sofa
Handcrafted by Hi tech furniture in 005, Mugumu-Ini, Nairobi, Kenya
The Kifaru Corner Sofa is an L-shaped corner sofa handcrafted in Kenya. It was built seat by seat in a workshop where frames are assembled before the upholstery is cut and fitted by hand. The buttoning across the back cushions is set by eye, which is why the dimples sit in a rhythm rather than a grid. Small differences between one cushion and the next are part of how it was made. The sofa carries a light, flecked upholstery in a soft oatmeal tone, with a visible weave that catches the light across the seat fronts. Deep back cushions are shallow-buttoned and squared at the corners, while the seat cushions run in wide, flat sections that meet flush at the return. The arms are low and straight, and the whole body lifts on short turned wooden feet in a warm honey tone. A separate corner section extends into a chaise, giving the piece its open L footprint. Place it against the long wall of a living room so the chaise reads into the floor, or angle it toward a window where daylight can sit on the weave. It pairs easily with a round low table, a textured rug and a couple of darker cushions for contrast. The chaise end takes a folded throw, a book and a long afternoon without much fuss. Buying from a Kamara maker means buying directly from a Kenyan workshop. Each sofa is finished by the people who built it, and the marks of that work stay visible in the piece.
