Efubwe Bookshelf
Handcrafted by Modernbuild in 005, Upper Savannah, Nairobi, Kenya
The Efubwe Bookshelf is an open shelving unit handcrafted in Kenya. It was built at a height that sits comfortably below eye level, so the top becomes a second surface rather than a wall of storage. The proportions are quiet and squared, with a full back panel that closes the unit and gives everything on the shelves a calm backdrop. The frame is a warm-toned timber with visible grain and a small knot left plainly in view on the back panel. Three horizontal shelves divide the interior into open bays of similar depth, each running the full width of the case. The top is finished in a pale, flat surface that contrasts against the timber sides. Edges are simple and unmoulded, and the corners meet in straight, uninterrupted lines. A bookshelf of this scale works in an entry, a hallway, a home office or beside a sofa where a taller unit would crowd the room. The lower bay takes a woven basket; the middle holds stacked books and an object or two; the upper bay suits smaller hardbacks and a bowl. The top surface is deep enough for a lamp and a plant. Kenyan furniture making is a workshop craft, built one piece at a time by makers who cut, assemble and finish by hand. Buying through Kamara means the money reaches the workshop that made this bookshelf, and it means owning something with the small, honest variations that hand assembly leaves behind.
