Kilifi Ottoman Bench
Handcrafted by high point
The Kilifi Ottoman Bench is an upholstered ottoman bench handcrafted in Kenya. It was built around a single generous cushioned plane rather than a divided seat, which is why it reads as calmly as it does. The proportions are deliberately low, so the piece sits below the line of a sofa arm and keeps a room feeling open. Every seam and leg has been fitted by hand. The upholstered top is pale and finely textured, with a gentle nubbed surface that catches light softly and shows a slight shadow where the fabric wraps the corners. The rectangular cushion is held on four slim, round legs that taper toward the floor and are left in a light natural timber tone. The join between the pale seat and the warm timber is the only contrast the design allows itself, and the edges of the ottoman bench stay soft rather than sharp. In a living room it works as a low table in front of a sofa, holding a tray, books and a small planter, and it becomes extra seating when more people arrive than there are chairs. It also suits the foot of a bed, a wide hallway or a window bay. Placed on a patterned rug, the plain upholstery gives the eye somewhere quiet to rest. Kenyan furniture making is a workshop craft, carried out by hand in small teams who cut, frame and upholster in the same space. Buying from a Kamara maker means your piece comes directly from that workshop, and the small variations in it are the record of the hands that made it.
