Olkaria Sofa
Handcrafted by Kemu furniture in 005, Upper Savannah, Nairobi, Kenya
The Olkaria Sofa is a three-seater sofa handcrafted in Kenya on a blue gum frame. Its shape follows a familiar workshop discipline: a straight back, low square arms, and a tufted panel worked button by button across the backrest. The nailhead trim is set individually along the arms and base, following the line of the frame rather than cutting across it. The frame is built from blue gum. Over it sits grey upholstery with a soft, lightly napped surface that shifts tone as light crosses it, reading darker in the shadow of the arms and lighter across the seat. Three loose seat cushions run the length of the sofa, each one sitting flush with the arm line. The tufted back holds its shape in a regular grid of buttons, and the base rests on short, dark turned feet. This is a sofa for the main sitting room, positioned along a wall or floated against a window where daylight can pick up the tufting. The neutral grey takes colour well, so striped or clay-toned cushions and a knitted throw over one arm sit comfortably on it. An upholstered ottoman or a low table in front completes the arrangement for reading, television and long conversations. Upholstered furniture in Kenya is largely a workshop craft, built to order in small teams where frame-making, padding and finishing happen under one roof. Buying through Kamara connects you to that chain directly, and to a maker whose hand is visible in the evenness of the buttons and the spacing of the studs.
