Sagana Sofa
Handcrafted by Stanjosh furniture in 005, Upper Savannah, Nairobi, Kenya
The Sagana Sofa is a two-seater sofa handcrafted in Kenya from bluegum. It is built around a solid timber frame, then padded and covered by hand so that every seam and piped edge follows the line of the arm. The proportions are deliberately low and generous, favouring depth over height. Small variations in the stitching are part of how the piece was made. The frame is bluegum, cut and joined before upholstery begins. The covering is a textured woven fabric in a deep charcoal grey, outlined throughout with a pale contrast piping that traces the arms, the split back cushions and the seat edge. Arms are wide and squared, filled enough to hold their shape. The sofa sits on short dark timber feet, and a matching ottoman repeats the same piping detail, finished with a small leather side pocket. This sofa suits a reading room, a study or a compact sitting room where the seating needs to work hard without dominating. The ottoman can serve as a footrest, an extra perch or a surface for a tray and a book. The dark upholstery holds its own against patterned rugs and warm timber shelving, and the piping keeps the silhouette legible in low lamplight. Kenyan workshops have long worked bluegum for furniture, and this sofa comes from that practical tradition of building solid frames first and dressing them second. Buying through Kamara connects you directly to the maker who cut, joined and upholstered it, in a market where that link is usually lost.
