Nyika Bed
Handcrafted by Stanjosh furniture in 005, Upper Savannah, Nairobi, Kenya
The Nyika Bed is an upholstered mahogany bed handcrafted in Kenya. The headboard is built as a grid of soft squares, each one padded and stitched separately so the surface reads as a quiet piece of relief work rather than a flat panel. Around the base, vertical channels run in an even rhythm from corner to corner. The making is slow and additive, one section at a time. The frame is mahogany, wrapped in a textured charcoal-grey upholstery with a low, matte nap. Proportions are generous and grounded: the headboard rises tall and square-shouldered, while the padded surround sits close to the floor on small dark feet. Corners are rounded rather than sharp, and the seams between panels are the only visible drawing on the piece. Nothing is polished or glossy; the surface absorbs light instead of reflecting it. This bed suits a room with plenty of daylight, where the dark upholstery can act as an anchor against pale walls and linen bedding. Warm timber bedsides sit naturally beside it, as do woven rugs and stoneware. The padded headboard is comfortable to lean against for reading, and the low surround keeps the room feeling open. Kenyan furniture-making runs on hand skill: framing, padding and stitching done by people who have made the same forms many times over. Buying from a Kamara maker means buying directly from that workshop tradition, with the maker's judgement visible in the alignment of every panel.
