Bahari Ridge Accent Chair
Handcrafted by Stanjosh furniture in 005, Upper Savannah, Nairobi, Kenya
The Bahari Ridge Accent Chair is an upholstered armchair handcrafted in Kenya from kempha. It is built around a low, curved back and a generous rounded seat, a shape that asks to be sat in sideways as often as squarely. The proportions are deliberately compact, so the chair reads as a soft object in a room rather than a heavy one. The upholstery is kempha in a warm burnt-orange tone, with a soft matte nap that shifts lighter and darker as it catches the light. A single piped seam runs around the seat cushion, and the curved back rail sits away from the body on short posts, leaving a visible gap that keeps the silhouette from feeling solid. Four tapered legs in a pale, lightly grained timber lift the frame clear of the floor. This is a chair for the corner of a living room, a bedroom reading nook, or the quiet end of a hallway. It works beside a window where daylight can pick up the nap of the fabric, and pairs easily with a low wooden coffee table, a floor lamp and a textured rug. One chair holds a book and a mug; two face each other well. Kenyan furniture making has long combined upholstery skill with locally worked timber, and that pairing is visible here in the balance between the soft body and the exposed legs. Buying through Kamara means buying from an independent Kenyan workshop, with the maker's hand present in the shaping, the stitching and the finish of each piece.
