Bahari Bedside Chest of Drawers
Handcrafted by Stanjosh furniture in 005, Upper Savannah, Nairobi, Kenya
The Bahari Bedside Chest of Drawers is a two-drawer bedside chest of drawers handcrafted in Kenya. The piece is built around a heavy squared frame with softly rounded corner posts, a detail that takes patience to shape by hand. The contrast between the darker outer structure and the lighter drawer fronts is deliberate, and the maker has let the grain do the decorating rather than adding hardware. Two full-width drawers sit flush within the frame, opening without visible handles so the front reads as a single calm panel. The timber shows an open, flowing grain across both drawer faces, catching light in soft bands. The top overhangs slightly and is finished smooth. Below, four turned ball feet lift the chest of drawers clear of the floor, giving the solid form a lighter footing. Placed beside a bed, it holds a lamp, a book and a morning cup within easy reach, with the drawers taking the small things that should not be on show. The scale suits a bedroom with a low bed, and the piece works equally well as a hallway or living-room storage cabinet. It sits comfortably against pale walls, linen bedding and wool rugs, and looks at home on dark timber floors. Kenyan furniture making runs on small workshops where one maker sees a piece through from rough stock to finished surface. Buying through Kamara connects you to that direct line of work. Small variations in tone and grain are part of how the piece was made, not faults in it.
