Kilifi Bedside Chest
Handcrafted by Edu"de" design furniture in 005Upper savannah nairobi
The Kilifi Bedside Chest is a two-drawer mahogany bedside chest handcrafted in Kenya. Its proportions follow a traditional cabinetmaking language: a moulded overhanging top, recessed drawer fronts framed by a raised border, and a stepped plinth that lifts the piece cleanly off the floor. Each element has been shaped and fitted by hand, so the mouldings meet at the corners with the slight individuality of workshop work rather than machine repetition. The chest is made from mahogany, finished in a deep reddish-brown tone that darkens where the moulding catches shadow. The grain reads as fine and close, running in long vertical lines across the drawer fronts and side panels. Two drawers sit one above the other, each fitted with a shaped metal backplate and a swing drop handle in a pale, softly aged finish that contrasts against the dark timber. In a bedroom, this bedside chest holds a lamp, a small plant and a short stack of books on top, while the drawers take the things you want near the bed but out of sight. The dark timber sits comfortably against pale walls, linen bedding and woven texture. It also works away from the bed, as a hallway or living-room storage piece beside a chair. Kenyan furniture making draws on generations of hand skill, and mahogany has long been worked in local workshops for pieces meant for daily domestic use. Buying from a Kamara maker means your piece comes from a named workshop rather than an anonymous production line, and the money moves directly into that maker's trade.
