Kilifi Sideboard
Handcrafted by By Faith Furnitures in 005, Upper Savannah, Nairobi, Kenya
The Kilifi Sideboard is a low sideboard handcrafted in Kenya from board. It was built by a Kamara maker working to a long, quiet horizontal line, with fluted door fronts cut in close, even ribs. The proportions are deliberately low-slung, so the piece reads as a shelf of light rather than a block of storage. Every rib and edge was shaped and finished by hand. The carcass is board, finished in a soft off-white that catches raking light across the fluting and turns each groove into a fine shadow. Two full-height doors sit at either end, with a single drawer and an open central niche between them. The top is flat and unbroken. Four splayed legs in a warm, contrasting timber tone lift the body clear of the floor, and the surface has a matte, lightly tactile character rather than a glossy one. This sideboard works as a television console in a living room, with the open niche holding books, a bowl or a remote and the flanking cupboards taking cables and clutter out of sight. It also settles well in a hallway or a dining room, where the flat top can carry a lamp, a vase of foliage or a tray. Against pale walls and wood flooring, it stays calm. Kenyan furniture-making runs on hand skill and small workshops, where a maker cuts, assembles and finishes a piece from start to end. Buying through Kamara means buying that named, local craft directly, with the marks of hand finishing left visible rather than sanded into anonymity.
