The Athiru Sideboard is a sideboard handcrafted in Kenya from board. It was drawn as one long, quiet horizontal line, with the detail kept to the smallest gestures a maker can leave behind. The doors carry no handles at all. Instead, a shallow notch is cut into the top edge of each panel, so the piece reads as a single uninterrupted surface until you reach for it. The carcass and doors are built from board in a pale, even tone, warmed slightly where the light crosses the front. Two doors sit at the left, a further door at the right, and between them an open bay is divided by a fixed shelf. The cabinet rests on a low recessed base, which lifts the body clear of the floor and lets the silhouette float against the wall. Surfaces are flat and matte, with no moulding, trim or applied hardware to interrupt them. In a living room it works as a media console: the open centre takes a receiver, a player and their cabling, while the closed compartments absorb everything you would rather not see. The top has room for a soundbar, a stack of books, a vase or a tray of glassware. It also suits a hallway or a dining room, where the same closed volume becomes linen and serving storage. Kenyan furniture making moves easily between the very old and the very current, and this cabinet belongs to the latter conversation.
