Thika Shelf
Handcrafted by Glory furniture in 005, Upper Savannah, Nairobi, Kenya
The Thika Shelf is a shelving unit handcrafted in Kenya from board. It is built as a tall, upright case with open tiers rather than doors, so everything placed on it stays in view. The cross-bracing on each side gives the frame its rhythm and lets light pass through from the room behind. The proportions are narrow and vertical, drawn for a wall rather than a corner. The unit is made of board and finished in a soft white that reads clean against a pale wall. Six horizontal tiers divide the height, spaced generously enough for upright books, framed pictures and woven baskets. Each side panel carries an X-brace above a solid lower kick panel, and the shelf closes at the bottom with a single drawer set on a plain round knob. The painted surface is smooth and matte, with the edges left crisp. This is a shelving piece for a living room, a study or a wide hallway. It holds books, art monographs, folded linen, camera equipment and the small objects that otherwise collect on tables, while the drawer takes the things you would rather not display. Set beside an upholstered armchair and a reading lamp it becomes the working wall of a quiet corner. Kenyan furniture making runs through small workshops where cabinets and cases are cut, assembled and painted by hand, one at a time. Buying through Kamara connects you directly to a maker working in that tradition. Slight variation from piece to piece is part of how the work is done.
