Osoro Shelf
Handcrafted by Glory furniture in 005, Upper Savannah, Nairobi, Kenya
The Osoro Shelf is a freestanding bookshelf handcrafted in Kenya from board. The piece follows a quiet, classical logic: a tall rectangular case, evenly divided, with a repeating X motif cut into each side panel. That detail does the decorative work so the shelves themselves can stay plain and useful. The frame is built from board and finished in a soft, even white that reads almost chalky in daylight. Five open compartments run the full height, each one deep enough for books stood upright and wide enough for a bowl or a framed picture set flat against the back. Edges are square and unmoulded. The open ends let light pass through the crossed bracing, so the bookshelf holds its height without visually blocking a wall. It suits a study, a hallway, a landing or the corner of a sitting room where books have started to gather on the floor. Placed near a window it catches side light along the shelf edges. Mix reference books with objects — a ceramic bowl, a small clock, a portrait leaned rather than hung — and leave one shelf half empty so the arrangement can keep changing. It sits comfortably beside a timber desk or a reading chair. Kenya's furniture workshops have long worked in painted board for cabinetry of this kind, building to proportion by eye and by habit. Buying through Kamara connects you directly to that workshop tradition, and to a maker whose hand is legible in the cut of every X.
