The Fumbo Shelf is a narrow four-tier shelf handcrafted in Kenya from cypress. Its form is deliberately simple: a tall rectangular frame with shelves set at alternating depths, so the stack reads as a quiet zigzag rather than a flat grid. The offset rhythm is the whole idea, and it only works when each board is cut and seated with care. The shelf is built from cypress and carries a dark, near-black finish that sits close to the wood rather than covering it. Grain lines run visibly along the uprights and across the shelf faces, and the edges are left square with a soft break at the corners. The proportions are upright and slim, taller than it is wide, with open sides and an open back that keep the piece from feeling heavy. Its footprint suits the places larger shelving cannot reach. Slide it beside a sofa arm as a shelf that doubles as a side surface, stand it in a hallway, or set it in a bedroom corner for books, a small bowl, a trailing plant. The staggered tiers hold stacked volumes on the deeper boards and lighter objects on the shallow ones. Cypress is a familiar timber in Kenyan workshops, and this piece reflects a local approach to joinery: clean lines, honest edges, nothing hidden behind trim. Buying through Kamara connects you directly to the workshop that made it, and to a small, considered run of furniture rather than an anonymous shipment.
