The Twiga Shelf is a freestanding shelving unit handcrafted in Kenya from cyprus. Its defining gesture is the sweeping cut along one side, where a solid panel rises and tapers like a drawn bow, leaving the opposite edge open to the room. The shelves step back as they climb, so the whole piece reads as one continuous curve rather than a stack of boxes. It is a quiet piece of joinery that asks to be looked at twice. Cyprus timber forms the carcass, the vertical panel and the five horizontal tiers, all carried in a smooth white finish that mutes the grain and lets the silhouette do the work. The sides are flush and unadorned, the shelf edges square, and the back is left open so wall colour reads through each opening. Proportions are upright and narrow, taking height rather than floor. This shelf suits a living room alcove, a hallway that needs storage without bulk, a study wall, or a bedroom corner beside a window. The lower openings take baskets, folded throws or records; the upper tiers hold books, ceramics and a trailing plant. Because one flank is closed and one is open, it also works as a soft divider at the end of a sofa. Kenyan woodworking has long favoured locally milled softwoods like cyprus, worked by hand in small workshops. Buying through Kamara connects you directly to that workshop tradition, and to a maker whose decisions about line, spacing and surface you can read in the finished piece.
