The Chumvi Shelf is a freestanding shelving unit handcrafted in Kenya from cyprus. It was built as a single tall case divided into two vertical columns, each carrying its own run of open compartments. The narrower column is stacked with closely spaced shelves; the wider one is given fewer, deeper openings. The result is a piece that reads as one object but stores in two different rhythms. The frame and shelves are cut from cyprus and finished in a soft white paint that covers the grain and keeps the edges crisp. Shelf fronts are square and unmoulded, and the side panel shows a row of small round recesses spaced along its height. Proportions are upright and slim in depth, so the unit sits close to a wall without crowding the floor in front of it. This shelf suits a child's room, a study corner, a hallway or a living area where storage has to stay visible. The tighter compartments hold picture books upright and small objects at eye level, while the taller openings at the base take woven baskets, folded blankets or boxed games. Photographed here against a pale wall in daylight, it pairs easily with light timber furniture and natural fibre rugs.
