Olerai Shelf
Handcrafted by Ochich furniture in 005, Karen, Nairobi, Kenya
The Olerai Shelf is a tall, narrow shelf handcrafted in Kenya from cypress. Its proportions are deliberately slim, so the piece reads as a single vertical column rather than a wall of storage. The open bays are stacked at even intervals, each one framed by a solid side panel that carries the eye from floor to top edge. The shelf is built from cypress and finished in a deep, near-black tone that sits close to the timber, so the grain still shows as fine vertical striations across the panels and shelf fronts. Horizontal shelves meet the uprights flush, and a solid back closes the upper bays while the lower bays stay open. Edges are squared and unadorned. The surface has a low, matte character that absorbs light rather than reflecting it. This is a shelf for narrow walls: beside a window, in the gap next to a sofa, at the end of a hallway, or flanking a doorway in a pair. The upper bays suit trailing plants, small ceramics and stacked books; the lower, taller bays take baskets and larger volumes. Against pale walls and linen curtains, the dark frame gives a room a quiet anchor point. Cypress is widely worked by Kenyan furniture makers, and pieces like this one come out of small workshops where a maker cuts, assembles and finishes the same piece from start to end. Buying through Kamara means the shelf reaches you directly from that workshop, with the marks of hand finishing left visible rather than sanded into anonymity.
