Bahari Ridge Coffee Table
Handcrafted by Glory furniture in 005, Upper Savannah, Nairobi, Kenya
The Bahari Ridge Coffee Table is a round coffee table handcrafted in Kenya from board. Its form is built in two levels: a lifted circular centre ringed by four curved lower ledges that break the outline into separate landing places. The design reads as one piece from a distance and as several surfaces once you sit down beside it. The table is made from board in a deep, near-black tone, with a subtle open grain visible across the top where the light falls. Edges are cut clean and slightly squared, and the joints between the upper disc and the surrounding segments are left visible rather than disguised. Beneath, a dark splayed base lifts the whole arrangement clear of the floor, so the shape appears to float above the rug. In the photograph it anchors a seating group of upholstered swivel chairs and a leather lounge chair, holding a stack of books, a teapot on a tray, a glass and a notebook without crowding. The stepped ledges suit a room where several people put things down at once. It works over a patterned rug, in daylight from a tall window, and in living rooms where the table is the centre of conversation. Kamara works with independent Kenyan makers who build furniture piece by piece rather than on a production line. Buying here means the money follows the hands that did the work, and the table carries the small marks of being made by a person.
