The Nyafula Planter is a clay floor planter handcrafted in Kenya. It is shaped by hand into an eight-sided vessel that narrows toward the base, so the form reads as sculpture before it reads as a container. The slight variation between facets is the record of the hand that made it, and no two panels meet at quite the same angle. The planter is made of clay, finished in a deep, near-black matte tone that absorbs rather than reflects light. Each flat face is separated by a soft ridge, and the surface carries a faintly mottled texture where the material has taken the finish unevenly. The wide mouth tapers to a smaller footprint, which keeps the silhouette upright and compact even when it is filled with soil and a large-leaved plant. This is a planter for a floor rather than a shelf. It suits a broad-leaf specimen set beside a window or a glazed door, where side light can catch the leaves and the dark body anchors the corner.
