The Ecafi Bed is a single bed handcrafted in Kenya from mahogany and block board. The frame is built as a simple rectangle of squared posts and straight rails, a form that has been repeated in Kenyan workshops for generations because it is honest and quiet. Nothing about it is showy. The interest sits in the proportion and in the painted surface. Mahogany and block board are combined here, with the panelled headboard and matching low footboard reading as flat inset planes framed by narrow stiles. A capped rail runs across the top of the headboard, and the corner posts sit slightly proud with a small chamfer at the foot. The paint is a muted dusty pink, opaque and evenly laid, catching the light softly along the top edges of the rails. One long side is left open, so the bed can be pushed against a wall or stand free. This is a bed for a child's room or a guest room. Against a cream wall it holds a pale linen duvet, a knitted throw and a stack of pillows without competing with them. It suits a warm timber floor, a bedside table within reach and morning light from a window on one side. Kenyan furniture making is a workshop trade, carried out by hand in small teams who cut, assemble and finish each piece themselves. Buying this bed through Kamara means the money goes to that workshop, and the piece arrives with the small variations that hand-finished work always carries.
