Sengani Nesting Tables
Handcrafted by Africans furniture in 005, Upper Savannah, Nairobi, Kenya
The Sengani Nesting Tables are a set of three nesting side tables handcrafted in Kenya from mahogany. The three tops step down in size so the smallest slides beneath the largest and disappears until it is needed. The shaping of the legs and the softened edge of each top are the kind of details that only show up when someone works a piece slowly, by hand. Each table is built from mahogany, finished in a deep red-brown that reads almost burgundy where the light catches it and darker in the shadow of the stacked tops. The grain runs long across each surface and stays visible through the finish. A slim apron sits beneath every top, and the legs taper from a squared shoulder down to a narrow foot with a gentle outward curve. Proportions are upright rather than low, closer to a side table than a coffee table in height. Set the group beside a sofa or an armchair and use the largest as a lamp and book surface. Pull the smaller two out when guests arrive, for cups, a plate, a laptop. Against pale upholstery and a woven floor covering, the dark timber gives a room a point of weight. Woodworking runs deep in Kenya, and mahogany has long been a workshop favourite for furniture like this. Buying through Kamara means the set comes from a maker working at their own bench, at their own pace, rather than from a production line.
