The Alafya Console Table is a console table handcrafted in Kenya from metal and blackboard. The frame is cut, bent and joined rod by rod, each length set at a slightly different angle so the eye reads a single sweeping motion rather than a row of bars. Work like this is slow, and it shows in the evenness of the spacing. The structure is a rectangular metal outline in a warm golden tone, open on all sides and low enough in visual weight to read almost as drawing. Inside it, dozens of thin rods fan out from a pinched centre point and spread again toward the top and base, forming an hourglass twist that shifts as you walk past it. A rectangular blackboard top in flat white caps the frame with a clean, matte surface and a crisp square edge. A console table this narrow belongs in an entrance hall, along a corridor, or against the empty wall of a living room. The photograph shows it doing exactly that: a vase of foliage, a small lamp, a pair of stacked books, keys landing at the end of the day. Set below a round mirror it catches side light, and the rods throw a faint striped shadow onto the wall behind. Kenyan metalwork has long been shaped in small workshops where fabrication is done by hand and by measure.
