Dacha Storage Cabinet
Handcrafted by Africans furniture in 005, Upper Savannah, Nairobi, Kenya
The Dacha Storage Cabinet is a two-door storage cabinet handcrafted in Kenya from board. The louvred fronts are cut as a run of long, round-ended slots, repeated evenly across both doors so the rhythm reads as one continuous pattern when the cabinet is closed. It is a quiet piece of furniture that does its work through proportion rather than ornament. The carcass is built from board and finished in a soft, even white that keeps the surface flat and matte. Each door carries eight horizontal apertures, giving a glimpse of what sits inside and letting air move through the interior. Slim vertical handles in a warm metal tone run down the centre join, and the doors sit on visible barrel hinges. The top is a clean, unbroken plane with a modest overhang. Set it in an entrance hall for shoes, baskets and folded linen, or against a living-room wall where the open slots let stacked towels and boxes stay visible without looking untidy. The top holds a lamp, a vase and a short stack of books comfortably. Against pale walls and timber flooring it reads as light, and it works equally well in a bedroom as a linen store. Kenyan furniture making moves between workshop and hand, with cutting, assembly and finishing done in small workshops rather than on a production line. Buying through Kamara connects you directly to that work, and to the maker whose hands shaped this storage cabinet.
