Sokoni Shelf
Handcrafted by Bency furniture in 005, Upper Savannah, Nairobi, Kenya
The Sokoni Shelf is a freestanding storage shelf handcrafted in Kenya from board. The piece is built upright and narrow, with four open tiers stacked between two full-height side panels. Small irregularities in the grain and softly eased edges show that each component was shaped and fitted by hand rather than pressed out to a template. The shelf is made of board throughout. The two side panels run the full height and carry the horizontal tiers, which project slightly beyond the frame so the ends read as visible ledges. The tops of the sides are rounded into gentle domes, and the base flares outward into short feet that lift the lowest tier clear of the floor. The surface is pale and lightly finished, letting the open grain, knots and colour variation of the board stay visible. Because it is tall and slim, this shelf fits where a wider bookcase cannot: beside a doorway, at the end of a hallway, in a corner of a small kitchen, or in a bathroom. The four tiers suit paperbacks, folded towels, baskets, ceramics or a row of potted herbs near a window. Its light tone works easily against white or lime-washed walls. Kamara lists work by Kenyan makers who build furniture one piece at a time, in workshops where hand tools still do most of the shaping. Buying here means the piece arrives with its maker's marks intact, and the money follows the hands that made it.
