Ofalu Shoe Cabinet
Handcrafted by Be at home furniture in 005, Mugumu-Ini, Nairobi, Kenya
The Ofalu Shoe Cabinet is a shoe storage cabinet handcrafted in Kenya from board. It was made by hand in a small workshop, where each door was cut, slotted and fitted before the cabinet was assembled and finished. The slotted pattern is repeated across all three doors, aligned row by row so the front reads as one continuous rhythm. Small corrections of this kind are only possible when a piece is built by a person rather than a production line. The cabinet is built from board with a pale painted surface and a smooth, matte face. Three full-height doors each carry a column of rounded ventilation slots, cut through the panel so air moves freely behind them. Slim dark vertical handles sit at the centre pair of doors and at the outer edge, and the case rests on a recessed grey plinth with squared feet that lift it clear of the floor. This is a shoe cabinet for an entrance hall, a corridor or the end of a hallway where footwear collects. The flat top holds a lamp, a bowl for keys, a stack of books or a trailing plant. The vertical slots keep the inside ventilated, which matters for shoes worn daily, and the doors close the contents out of sight. Kenyan furniture making is a workshop trade, carried between makers through practice and repetition. Buying through Kamara means the cabinet comes from one of those workshops, with the maker paid directly for the work.
