Sagana Wardrobe
Handcrafted by Be at home furniture in 005, Mugumu-Ini, Nairobi, Kenya
The Sagana Wardrobe is a board wardrobe handcrafted in Kenya. It was built by a Kamara maker working to a quiet, architectural brief: two full-height doors, two drawers beneath, and nothing else competing for attention. The restraint is the craft here. Every panel line has to sit true, because there is no ornament to hide behind. The wardrobe is made from board, cut and assembled into a tall rectangular case that sits on a low plinth. Both doors carry a recessed panel with a shallow shadow line around the edge, a detail that gives the flat white surface some depth as the light moves across it. Below the right-hand door, two drawers run the width of the lower section. Slim tubular pulls in a warm brass tone are fitted vertically on the doors and horizontally on the drawer fronts. In a bedroom it stands against a plain wall and holds hanging clothes above, folded pieces and smaller items in the drawers below. The flat top takes a basket, a plant or a stack of books. It also works in a hallway or a guest room where coats and linen need somewhere to go. The pale finish sits easily beside oak floors, jute rugs and linen bedding. Buying from a Kamara maker means your wardrobe was built by hand in a Kenyan workshop rather than pressed out in volume. Kenya's furniture trade runs on small benches and long-held skill, and pieces like this one are how that work reaches homes directly.
