Chumvi Dining Set
Handcrafted by Benmis furniture and fabricators in 005, Umoja, Nairobi, Kenya
The Chumvi Dining Set is a four-seat marble and metal dining set handcrafted in Kenya. The table reads as a single quiet gesture: a square slab resting on a slender pedestal that opens into a cross-shaped foot. The chairs answer it with thin uprights and a low ladder back, drawn with the same restraint. Nothing in the group competes for attention. Marble and metal carry the whole piece. The tabletop is pale and heavily veined, with grey and soft gold movement running across the surface and a squared, lightly bevelled edge. The metal is finished in black and shaped into fine tubular legs that taper to the floor. Each chair holds a round upholstered seat in a clear, saturated red, buttoned into a shallow ring of frame that sits flush with the seat pad. This dining set suits a kitchen corner, a compact dining room or an apartment where a round table would waste the walls. The square top comfortably takes four plates, a small vase and a grinder or two. The chairs pull fully clear of the pedestal, which makes it easy to seat people on all four sides, and the red seats read especially well against timber cabinetry and a woven floor covering. Kenyan metalwork has long been a craft of adaptation, worked to order in small city and roadside workshops rather than turned out in volume. Buying through Kamara connects you directly to that practice, and to a maker whose hand is visible in the welds, the upholstery and the way the stone was chosen.
