Suswa Dining Set
Handcrafted by Benmis furniture and fabricators in 005, Umoja, Nairobi, Kenya
The Suswa Dining Set is a four-seater dining set handcrafted in Kenya from metal and marble. The frames are shaped and welded by hand, then finished in a deep matte black that reads almost graphic against the stone. Each chair back is curved at the crest, a small detail that shows where a maker's hand has bent the metal rather than a machine. The square top is marble, pale and softly veined with warm amber and grey movement that runs off the edge in no repeated pattern. It sits on a slim central metal column that opens into four splayed legs, joined low by a looping stretcher. The four chairs echo that language: thin tubular uprights, gently bowed side rails and a padded seat and back panel in a saturated red. Surfaces are smooth, the stone cool to the touch, the upholstery matte. This dining set suits a compact kitchen corner, an apartment dining nook or a covered terrace where four people can sit comfortably without crowding a room. The red carries well against neutral walls, timber cabinetry and a jute or sisal rug. A bowl of fruit, a vase of cuttings and a pendant hung low above the table is all the styling it needs. Kenyan metalwork and stone finishing are practised in small workshops where one bench often completes a piece end to end. Buying through Kamara puts your order directly with that workshop, and keeps the maker's decisions — the bend of a chair back, the cut of a slab — visible in the finished furniture.
