Fumbeni Dining Table
Handcrafted by Eve's Fabricators in 005, Umoja, Nairobi, Kenya
The Fumbeni Dining Table is a marble and metal dining table handcrafted in Kenya. It pairs a pale stone surface with a dark, plainly built trestle frame, so the two materials read as separate ideas rather than one blended object. The restraint is deliberate: nothing competes with the movement in the stone itself. The top is marble, cut to a rectangle with gently eased corners and a squared edge that shows the depth of the slab. Its surface is near-white and threaded with grey veining that drifts diagonally across the plane, so no two areas of the table look the same. Below, the metal base is finished in matt black and formed as two uprights on wide feet, joined beneath the top. The frame sits inboard of the corners, leaving the ends clear for chairs. This dining table seats a family along its length and takes daylight well, as in the photograph where morning sun crosses the stone and picks up the veining. It suits an open-plan kitchen or a dining corner with a woven rug underfoot, and it sits comfortably with timber-framed chairs and simple ceramics. Kenyan makers have long worked confidently in metal, and this base reflects that fabricating tradition applied to contemporary furniture. Buying through Kamara means buying from a named workshop rather than an anonymous supply chain, and paying for the hours of a person who cut, welded and finished the piece by hand.
