Eldama Study Chair
Handcrafted by Eve's Fabricators in 005, Umoja, Nairobi, Kenya
The Eldama Study Chair is a study chair with an attached writing tablet, handcrafted in Kenya from metal and cyprus. It belongs to a long line of Kenyan school and reading furniture, where a seat and a writing surface are joined into a single, purposeful piece. The frame is bent and welded by hand, then paired with shaped timber panels fixed with visible fasteners. Nothing about the construction is hidden. The structure is tubular metal in a dark matte finish, braced low between the legs and carried forward in a single sweeping arm that supports the tablet. Seat and backrest are cyprus, curved gently to follow the body, with an open golden grain that catches light across the surface. The writing surface sits pale and flat, angled slightly toward the sitter. Proportions are compact, with a small footprint for the amount of function it holds. This chair works in a classroom, a training room, a home study or a corner of a bedroom used for reading and note-taking. It holds a notebook, a laptop or a cup without needing a separate desk. Place several in a row for a workshop setting, or a single one beside a window where morning light falls on the timber. Kamara works with Kenyan makers who build furniture in small workshops rather than on production lines. Buying this study chair means buying from a named trade with its own standards, tools and habits of work — and paying for the hours a person spent shaping metal and wood by hand.
