The Akaru Dining Chair is a metal dining chair handcrafted in Kenya. Its most distinctive feature is the tall rear panel, cut through with small squares, diamonds and dashes that read almost like a line of script. The perforations catch daylight and throw a scatter of shadow onto the floor behind the chair, so the piece changes character as the room moves through the day. The frame is metal, formed from slim tubular lengths that rise into tapered back uprights and are braced low between the legs. The flat backplate is set between those uprights and carries the punched pattern in graduated rows, dense at the top and spare toward the base. Metal surfaces show a warm, lightly burnished tone with a soft sheen rather than a mirror shine. The seat is a generous cushioned pad covered in a pale, nubby textured weave with visible flecks of deeper tone. This is a dining chair for a table you actually eat at.
