Fanaka Display Cabinet

The Fanaka Display Cabinet is a storage cabinet handcrafted in Kenya from board. It was built as a single tall case and then divided into distinct compartments, so that some things are shown and others are put away. The proportions are upright and calm, with a slim moulded cornice reading as a quiet line across the top. Small plinth feet lift the case just clear of the floor. The carcass is board, carried on a pair of glazed upper doors, two shallow drawers at the waist and a pair of solid doors below. Inside the glazed section, fixed shelves divide the space into three tiers. The surface is painted in a soft off-white with a fine vertical grain still legible beneath it, and the doors are edged with a gently arched glazing profile. Slender bar pulls in a warm brassy metal run vertically on the doors and horizontally on the drawers. This cabinet suits a dining room, a hallway or the end wall of an open living space. The upper section holds glassware, decanters, bottles and books where light can reach them. The drawers take linens, coasters and small table pieces, while the lower cupboards absorb the things you would rather not display. The flat top is deep enough for a lamp, a sculpture or a stack of books. Cabinetmaking is a well-established trade in Kenya, and workshops here build casework by hand, piece by piece. Buying from a Kamara maker means the cabinet in your room was made by a named workshop rather than assembled anonymously at volume.
