Aciru Children's Bed
Handcrafted by Glory furniture in 005, Upper Savannah, Nairobi, Kenya
The Aciru Children's Bed is a children's bed handcrafted in Kenya from board. The shaping is what gives it character: the headboard and footboard are cut into soft scalloped crowns rather than left square, and a small illustrated princess figure sits at the centre of each panel. It is a piece made with a child's eye level in mind. The bed is built from board with a smooth white painted surface that reads as one continuous plane across the tall footboard, the headboard and the low side rail. That rail is cut with evenly spaced vertical openings, so it screens the mattress edge without closing the bed in. The open side is left clear for climbing in and out, and the panels meet the floor on gently curved cut-outs that lift the frame slightly. This is a bed for a first proper bedroom — the stage after a cot, when a child still wants a boundary at the edge of the mattress. The white finish sits easily against a painted wall and a warm timber floor, and it leaves room for bedding, a soft toy and a low bookshelf to do the decorating. Pair it with a small bedside table and a reading lamp within reach. Kenyan makers have long worked painted board into fitted, purposeful furniture, and children's beds are among the pieces where that shaping shows most clearly. Buying through Kamara connects you directly to the workshop that cut, assembled and painted this bed, rather than to a warehouse catalogue.
