The Fokosi Shelf is a tall open shelving unit handcrafted in Kenya from cypress board. The frame is assembled as a series of upright posts and horizontal tiers, with the side panels broken up by slats and X-shaped bracing. Every join sits in plain view, so the structure itself becomes the decoration. The proportions are vertical and narrow, drawn to sit against a single stretch of wall. Cypress board makes up the posts, the shelves and the openwork sides. The wood carries a light honey tone with visible straight grain, and the surface has been smoothed to a soft matte rather than a high shine. Five shelves divide the height into even bays, each one open at the back so light passes through. The X-braces repeat down both flanks, giving the shelf a rhythm you read from across the room. This shelf works in a living room beside a sofa, in a study holding books and files, or in a hallway where a narrow footprint matters. The lower bay takes baskets and larger objects; the upper tiers suit books laid flat, ceramics, framed pictures and trailing plants. Placed near a window, the slatted sides throw a gentle pattern onto the wall behind. Cypress is a familiar timber in Kenyan workshops, and this kind of slatted, cross-braced carpentry belongs to a long local tradition of building furniture that shows its own frame.
