Ofimba Outdoor Chair
Handcrafted by Eric's furniture in 005, Karen, Nairobi, Kenya
The Ofimba Outdoor Chair is an outdoor chair handcrafted in Kenya from metal and thread. The frame is bent into a single rounded shell, then wrapped row by row with cord that follows the curve of the back. Each chair carries the small rhythmic variations that come from winding thread by hand rather than by machine. Metal forms the structure: a slim tubular outline for the shell and four tapered legs joined by a low stretcher near the floor. Thread is wound tightly across the open back and along the outer edge of the seat, creating a fine ribbed surface with narrow gaps that let light and air through. Loose cushions in a pale woven fabric sit in the seat and against the backrest. The overall proportion is low, wide and open, with the shell lifted clear of the ground on dark legs. This outdoor chair suits a balcony, a courtyard or a shaded section of terrace. Two placed either side of a small round table make a natural spot for morning coffee, and the open cord back keeps the arrangement visually light in a narrow space. The cushions can be lifted out and taken indoors when the weather turns. Cord-wrapped seating has a long life in Kenyan workshops, where metalworkers and weavers often work side by side on the same piece. Buying through Kamara connects you directly to the maker who built this chair, and to a craft tradition that treats a chair as something assembled patiently, by hand, one wrap at a time.
