Nanyuki Folding Chair
Handcrafted by Eric's furniture in 005, Karen, Nairobi, Kenya
The Nanyuki Folding Chair is an outdoor chair handcrafted in Kenya from mahogany. The frame is cut and shaped so that it folds flat, a construction that rewards careful fitting at every pivot point. Each piece carries the small variations of work done by hand, from the rounded ends of the arms to the way the grain runs along each upright. Mahogany forms the frame, arms and legs, finished so the timber's reddish warmth and straight grain remain visible. A panel of olive-green canvas is stretched across the back and a second across the seat, fixed to the uprights with visible stitching along the edges. The arms are broad and gently tapered, sitting above the seat at a relaxed height. Metal pivots at the joints allow the chair to close. This outdoor chair suits a terrace, a courtyard, a garden corner or a shaded veranda. It pairs easily with a low timber table, a woven rug and planted pots, and the folding frame means it can be moved between sun and shade through the day or stored flat when the space is needed for something else. Kenya has a long working tradition of hardwood furniture-making, and chairs like this one belong to that lineage of directors' and campaign seating adapted by local workshops. Buying through Kamara means buying directly from the Kenyan maker who built the piece, with the marks of hand assembly left visible rather than sanded into anonymity.
