Fumbe Sideboard
Handcrafted by NIHWAN FURNITURES in 005, Upper Savannah, Nairobi, Kenya
The Fumbe Sideboard is a low media sideboard handcrafted in Kenya from board. Its front is worked into fine chevron grooves that catch light across the pale surface, a pattern cut by hand and repeated across each door and drawer face. The proportions are deliberately long and quiet, so the piece reads as a horizon line rather than a block of storage. The carcass is built from board and finished in a flat white that keeps the grooved detailing legible. Two cupboards sit at either end, a shallow drawer opens at centre right, and an open bay runs between them for a soundbar, a console or stacked books. Slender brass-toned pulls and matching splayed legs lift the body clear of the floor, which keeps the whole sideboard visually light. It is designed as a television sideboard, and the open centre bay leaves room for cables and devices to sit within reach. Placed against a deep painted wall it holds a lamp, a stack of art books and a small planter without looking crowded. The same form works in a hallway as a drop point for keys and post, or in a dining room as a serving surface with linens stored below. Kenya's furniture workshops move easily between cabinetmaking and decorative surface work, and this piece sits in that tradition. Buying through Kamara means the maker is a small independent Kenyan workshop rather than a factory line, and that the hand-cut chevron front carries the small variations of work done one panel at a time.
