The Twiga Ridge Sideboard is a low media sideboard handcrafted in Kenya from board. It is built long and level, the way a room asks for when a television has to sit somewhere without dominating the wall. The chevron lines cut across each door were set out by hand, so the pattern reads as drawn rather than printed. Small decisions like the direction of that chevron are what separate a made piece from an assembled one. The carcass is board, finished in white across the doors and side panels, with a pale veined top that carries soft gold and grey movement. Two doors flank an open central bay, and within that bay sits a single grey-fronted drawer above a shelf, pulled forward slightly so it breaks the flatness of the front. Slender handles and openwork corner legs in a warm golden tone lift the whole cabinet clear of the floor. This sideboard was made for the living room wall. A screen sits comfortably on the top surface, the open bay takes a receiver or console with its cables reachable, and the closed compartments hide everything that does not need to be seen. It also works in a hallway or behind a sofa, holding books, a lamp and a shallow bowl for keys. Kenyan furniture making is a workshop trade, taught in person and refined through repetition.
