Nanyuki Display Cabinet
Handcrafted by Naftal furniture in 005, Upper Savannah, Nairobi, Kenya
The Nanyuki Display Cabinet is a board display cabinet handcrafted in Kenya. It is built as a single upright column, with a glazed and internally lit upper case set above a solid-fronted base. The proportions are deliberately narrow and vertical, so the piece reads as architecture rather than bulk. Every panel has been cut, faced and assembled by hand. The cabinet is made from board, finished in a smooth white surface that carries a soft matte sheen. A moulded cornice caps the top and a plinth grounds the base, giving the shelf unit a framed, cabinetmaker's silhouette. Two glass doors open onto three interior tiers washed in coloured light, and slim brass-toned handles run the full height of the doors. Below, an open bay of shelves sits beside a single hinged cupboard door. This is a display cabinet for a dining room, a living room corner or the wall behind a bar setup. The upper case suits glassware, bottles, ceramics and small collected objects that benefit from being lit. The lower shelves take plates and serving pieces within easy reach, while the closed cupboard hides what you would rather not see. Its narrow footprint works where a sideboard would crowd the floor. Kenyan furniture making moves between workshops and homes, and cabinets like this one are cut, edged and squared by hand before assembly. Buying through Kamara connects you directly to the maker who built the piece, and to a craft economy that is skilled, working and paid for its work.
