Chumvi Side Table
Handcrafted by Naftal furniture in 005, Upper Savannah, Nairobi, Kenya
The Chumvi Side Table is a side table handcrafted in Kenya from board with a marble top. It is built as a small tower: a squared drawer box lifted on a central plinth above a wide, rounded base. The silhouette is deliberately geometric, and the maker has softened every corner so the piece reads as sculpture rather than storage. The body is finished in a flat white, wrapped at the edges with narrow gold-toned banding that traces the drawer front, the plinth and the base. The top is marble, pale and lightly veined in grey, sitting flush within its frame. The drawer opens without a visible handle, so the front stays unbroken. Proportion does most of the work here: heavy base, floating box, a clear shadow gap between the two. Placed beside a sofa, the table holds a decanter, a pair of glasses, reading glasses and a book within easy reach. The lower base plate takes a small planter or a stack of magazines. It suits a living room with soft neutrals and city light, and it works equally well as a bedside table where the drawer swallows the small things that clutter a nightstand. Kenyan furniture making moves easily between hand skill and contemporary form, and this piece sits firmly in that conversation. Buying through Kamara means buying directly from a workshop that made the piece by hand, one at a time, rather than from an anonymous production line.
